Local or Well-Known
When booking a hotel, I prefer a local one rather than a well-known big city chain such as Marriotts, Ibis, Holiday Inns, etc. Why? Well, I prefer the full experience of the country I am visiting. Not that big chain hotels are bad, but, I feel that the small quaint and/or family-owned hotels provide me with the homey feel and are more welcoming. If they serve breakfast, it’s the typical breakfast for the area.
In Venice, Italy, we stayed at the Hotel Amadeus in Lista di Spagna Cannaregio 227, Venice and just a short walk from the Santa Lucia train station. The hotel was perfectly located in a neighborhood surrounded by shops, cafés, restaurants, and grocery stores.
It is a small quaint hotel decorated in a classic Venetian design. Our room was spacious and had two large windows. We requested a double bed but instead got two twin beds pushed together. We did not even notice it until we returned home and looked through the photos. There was also a chaise big enough to fit another person sleeping, as well as a small fridge, TV and safe for valuables. The room was carpeted (a negative for me). The bathroom was not big but it was comfortable and in okay conditions. You can tell it is quite old. It was clean but the shower tiles needed a little scrubbing.
The hotel does include breakfast – cold and hot. I have to agree that it was a good breakfast bar with a vast variety to choose from.
They do have a 24/7 staffed front desk. The staff was very polite, knowledgeable and accommodating.
I loved that it was a corner unit. We slept with both windows open, even though the rooms are equipped with air conditioners. The sea breeze made for a peaceful sleep.
We only found one outlet to charge our phones/gadgets. There is only one elevator and it is very small.
You can find great deals depending on the season you book your trip. Prices for Hotel Amadeus range from the low 50€ to the high 200€ per night.
Based on our experience, we rate the Hotel Amadeus a 3.5 on a scale from 1 thru 5.
